Scholarly journals are also known as academic journals. They focus on a particular field and contain articles written by experts in that field. Scholarly or academic publications publish research and updates of importance specific to that subject. For example, the publication Pediatric Nursing contains research studies written by pediatric nurses on topics related to their practice.

A related publication is a scholarly "peer-reviewed" journal. Peer-reviewed journal articles have gone through an extra level of oversight by fellow experts in the field to review accuracy and the use of proper research methods.

Psychology Today would not be considered a scholarly journal and it is not peer reviewed. It is more of a popular magazine, like for example, Time Magazine. It does however, have credible sources, and most instructors would agree that it is an acceptable source for a paper. You might want to check with your instructor to make sure.

If you want to limit your search to just scholarly journals:

  1. Are the sources that Psychology Today uses good and thus are an “acceptable” source to cite? Or are the articles itself an acceptable source to cite? Confused.

  2. Whether the articles from Psychology Today are acceptable sources to cite for your paper will depend on your assignment. For most assignments, yes, it would be a credible source to cite. However, if your assignment requires only peer-reviewed articles, it would not qualify. Peer-Reviewed articles have gone through additional oversight -- other experts in the field have reviewed it for accuracy. If you are in doubt, your instructor would be the best guide as to whether a particular article is allowable for your research.
