What is a search engine? What is a website?

A search engine is a web page that collects and organizes information from the Internet. Search engines do not evaluate the accuracy or reliability of the information, so it is important for students to evaluate the site and determine if the information there is reliable.  Google and Yahoo both began as search engines before adding different types of content, such as email and news services.

A website is computer code, displayed graphically, that is accessible through the Internet.  Websites can be created by businesses, individuals, government agencies, non-profit organizations, and a variety of other groups.  Because websites are not reviewed for accuracy, students must evaluate the site for accuracy.
